ECCO Waste Systems Ltd.
ECCO was founded in 1993 by five environmental engineers. The Company built the 24th Street SE Calgary Landfill in 1994, and has operated it ever since. The site design includes a line to protect groundwater, and wastes are covered frequently to avoid nuisances. Alberta Environment approved the site, and overviews operations and annual monitoring of the facility.
The company has developed and operated other secure sites in Western Canada. These sites receive wastes from Alberta's oilfields, but the Calgary site accepts only non-hazardous dry wastes. The Calgary wastes arise from manufacturing, demolition projects, and building construction.
Half the material disposed at the site is wood waste, and half of that is clean wood scrap. As a consequence, in 2004 ECCO began using clean wood to make coloured wood mulch for landscaping. ECCO also makes a finely screened uncoloured product for animal bedding.
Recycling will conserve landfill space, extending the site life to serve the City for twenty years or more.
